Alternate Nostril Breathing

We are doing a series on how to do simple techniques to help with stress and anxiety. Everyone is dealing with some sort of stress and anxiety. I'm stressed, you're stressed, it's probably why you are reading this right now!

Today we are going over a technique called Alternate Nostril Breathing. This is also sometimes called One Nostril Breathing and studies have shown it can help with improved cognitive function, improved emotional balance, and can help the autonomic nervous system (the balance between your fight or flight response vs. your day to day maintenance of the body response) and improve your cardio pulmonary function (which means your heart and your lungs).

The idea is that you are breathing air through one nostril and out through the other. Try it out and take just a moment to cover your right nostril and breath air in through the left. Then reverse it and cover your left nostril and breath out through the right. Take the next breath in through your left nostril, then reverse and breath out through your right nostril. Continue to alternate for a few minutes.

I hope that help you and we would love to see your thoughts in the comments!

These little techniques can't fix every problem, but they can help with mild to moderate daily stress. If you are dealing with serious anxiety and depression reach out and get help from someone. Please reach out to the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline available 24 hours a day.
